Retail workers being subjected to violence and abuse says Sligo councillor
The Sligo ChampionCoolaney based County Councillor Dara Mulvey has hit out at the lack of protection afforded to retail workers and has expressed his hope that the Protection of Retail Workers Act 2025 will help address matters.
“Despite being on the front lines every day, retail employees in Ireland are being targeted for violent attacks, theft, harassment, and abuse. The fact that these employees, who offer vital services to every community, do not have particular legal safeguards is intolerable,” stated Cllr Mulvey.
“The Protection of Retail Workers Act 2025 going through the houses of the Oireachtas will acknowledge the dangers they encounter and guarantee that those who endanger or injure retail employees be held responsible.
“The action was taken in response to a worrying increase in retail crime across the country. Nearly half of the 12% increase in theft and related offenses over the past year has been attributed to shop thefts, according to recent statistics.”
“According to the Global Retail Theft Report, Ireland now has the highest cost per capita for retail crime worldwide. RGDATA, the organization that represents more than 3,500 independent food merchants have stated unequivocally that they require stricter legislation, harsher sanctions, and improved assistance for retail employees. Retail workers need to feel safe at work. It's not just about the monetary loss.”
Cllr Mulvey outlined the financial impact theft is having on retailers and called on for greater Garda presence to support workers.
The average cost to each retailer represented by RGDATA is more than €40,000 per year, indicating the seriousness of the financial impact.
The Government must make it clear that assaulting a retail employee is a serious crime and not a petty offence. We also need increased Garda visibility in retail areas, improved employer support, and greater recognition and respect for the vital role retail workers play in our society stated Cllr Mulvey.
