A motion proposed by Cllr Dara Mulvey at the January sitting of Sligo County Council asked that the local authority to “write to the Department of Housing to ask what funding strategy can be put in place to enable the local authority to build extensions/convert attics for additional bedrooms for families who are in overcrowded council housing.”

Outlining the reason for his motion, Cllr Mulvey explained, “It would allow families to stay in location. Extensions to existing properties would help people rather than have to move or go on the transfer list. It will also increase the value of the property and it will remain in the ownership of the Council.”

The motion was supported by Cllr Gerard Mullaney who agreed, “It is a huge upheaval to move to a different area.”
