After years of campaigning there was good news this week when it was revealed that a new bus will begin bringing cancer patients soon from Sligo to Galway.

The issue was raised at Regional Health Forum by Cllr Marie Casserly who welcomed the positive news that the process to secure a fully accessible bus, with both toilet facilities and wheelchair access, is now near completion. It is expected that a five day a week service arrangement will be finalised within the next month.

Cllr Casserly said the update will bring reassurance to patients and families who rely on the service.

“This is finally some positive news for all those who have campaigned tirelessly for this vital service. The new fully accessible bus will make the journey to Galway for cancer treatment safer and more comfortable for everyone who depends on it.”

The current bus will remain operational until the new fixed service arrangement is in place, ensuring there is no disruption for patients in the meantime.

Cllr Casserly added, “I want to thank all those involved for their continued efforts and look forward to seeing the new service launched in the coming weeks.”
