Lack of signage at Dartry View branded safety risk for emergency services and residents
The Sligo ChampionAt the July meeting of the Sligo Borough Municipal District, Cllr Arthur Gibbons called for an estate name sign to be placed at the entrance to Dartry View on Connaughton Road.
Outlining the need for the signage to be erected, Cllr Gibbons’ motion stressed it was, “In order to clearly identify the estate, improve wayfinding for residents and visitors, and assist emergency services, delivery drivers and service providers in locating the estate quickly and safely.”
Speaking to his motion, Cllr Gibbons remarked, “At first glance, this may appear to be a small issue, but for the residents of Dartry View it is a matter of safety, accessibility, and recognition.
“Many estates throughout our county are clearly identified with official signage. Unfortunately, Dartry View has no such sign, making it unnecessarily difficult for visitors, delivery drivers, service providers, and, most importantly, the emergency services to locate the estate quickly.”
Highlighting some of the potential difficulties associated with having no sign to indicate the entrance to the estate, Cllr Gibbons commented, “In an emergency, every minute counts. Ambulances, fire services, and An Garda Síochána rely on clear and visible estate signage to reach people as quickly as possible. Something as simple as an official estate sign could make a real difference when time is critical.
“Residents should also be able to direct family members, carers, healthcare workers, and businesses to their homes without confusion. Delivery drivers and postal services are increasingly dependent on accurate location information, and clear estate identification benefits everyone who lives there.”
Cllr Gibbons continued, “Providing a professionally designed and installed sign would also give Dartry View the recognition it deserves as an established residential community. It would create a stronger sense of identity and pride for residents while enhancing the appearance of the entrance to the estate.
“The cost of erecting a sign is modest, particularly when compared with the practical benefits it would provide for years to come. It is a simple investment that improves public safety, supports essential services, and enhances the quality of life for local residents.
“I therefore ask my fellow councillors to support this common-sense motion and request that the Council arrange for an official estate name sign to be installed at the earliest opportunity.”
The motion was supported by Cllr Gino O’Boyle who agreed, “It is a long time waiting to be done,” while Cllr Ann Higgins remarked, “It needs to be more visible.”
