Calls for improved street lighting in the village of Lavagh received a setback at the recent Ballymote-Tubbercurry Municpal District meeting when it was pointed out that even though improved lighting is improved for pedestrians, Sligo County Council could be liable in the event of an accident occurring at the location.

In his motion before the meeting Cllr Barry Gallagher asked for “Sligo County Council to carry out an assessment and provide additional public street lighting within the village of Lavagh, outside the church and community hub where lighting is currently inadequate, in the interest of public safety, pedestrian safety and community wellbeing.”

Addressing his motion Cllr Gallagher said, “It’s very dark, two lights isn’t going to cost a serious amount.”

Supporting the motion Cllr Dara Mulvey asked, “What is the position with solar lights? Some lighting is better than no lighting.”

Addressing the motion and the queries raised, Paul O’Rourke Sligo County Council Senior Engineer said, It’s a question of economics. Solar lighting is a similar operation to traditional lighting, it is nearly the same cost for installation.” Mr O’Rourke explained, “The budget is for the maintenance of existing lighting without adding to what is there.”

Cllr Gerard Mullaney suggested “There can be low level lighting,” adding, “People have stepped off in the dark.”

This suggestion was also quashed by Mr O’Rourke who said, “Lighting has to light the road. If there is not adequate lighting and there is an accident the Council is liable. The Council is not liable if there is an accident but no lighting.”
