There are widespread concerns in Collooney and surrounding areas that the day care service based in the Health Centre is being considered for a possible move according to Sinn Féin Councillor Thomas Healy who confirmed he has received numerous requests from service users and their families in relation to this.

Cllr Healy outlined the services provided and stressed the importance of maintaining the service in Collooney.

“This day care service provides a three-day facility and meals for over 20 elderly people from Collooney, Ballygawley, Coolaney, Ballintogher and Ballisodare. This is a vital lifeline for these people and their families, and the facility must be maintained especially with an ever-aging population. The absence of information and consultation for these people has led to widespread anxiety as to the future of the service.”

Seeking clarity on the issue, Cllr Healy has written to the HSE and it has been confirmed a move is being considered. Cllr Healy is now calling on the HSE to contact service users are ensure services are maintained and improved.

“I have written to the HSE on this issue and they have confirmed that they are considering moving this service elsewhere. It is essential that service users’ views and needs are central in all planning and I am urging the HSE to contact service users and to reassure them as to the future service.

“I will be monitoring this and liaising with relevant people to ensure that, if there is a move, services are maintained and expanded and adequate facilities and transport are provided. We need to encourage and promote engagement with services for older people,” concluded Cllr Healy.”
