Cllr Fergal Nealon has welcomed the news that the proposed expansion of Cleveragh Regional Park has successfully passed the Part 8 planning process, paving the way for the project to now move forward to the funding stage.

The plans, which were passed at this week’s County Council meeting, include:a large regional playground, two basketball courts, a multi-use games court, a pump track and skate park and a fenced off-leash dog area.

Cllr Nealon said the milestone represents a major step forward in delivering free, inclusive, and safe outdoor recreation for the people of Sligo.

“This is a fantastic moment for Cleveragh and for the whole of Sligo,” he said. “Passing the Part 8 process brings us closer to turning these exciting plans into reality. The focus now is on securing funding so that we can deliver a space that promotes health, happiness, and community connection for all ages.”

Cllr Nealon added that Cleveragh Park has already proven itself as a vital hub for outdoor life in Sligo and that the expansion will future-proof it as a resource for generations to come.

“From toddlers learning to play, to teens enjoying the pump track, to older people staying active and social, this project really is for everyone. In a time when screen time is up and activity levels are down, these spaces are not optional extras, they are essential.”

Cllr. Nealon also praised the Sligo County Council Parks Department for its work to date in progressing the project and said he looked forward to seeing the vision move closer to delivery.

“We now have the green light on planning, and the next step is funding. I will continue to advocate strongly to make sure this project is brought to life for the people of Sligo,” he concluded.
