Grants to convert vacant ‘over shop’ spaces will ‘unlock homes and can be delivered quickly’
The Sligo ChampionA new grant to bring vacant space back into use can play a big role in delivering homes for key workers in Sligo, Cllr Thomas Walsh has said. Welcoming the new feature to the Vacant Property Refurbishment grant which focuses on empty spaces above retail premises’, Cllr Walsh said, “This grant will unlock homes, which can be delivered quickly in Sligo, without waiting years for new developments.”
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne stated that tackling vacancy and dereliction and bringing homes back into use is a key priority of this Government. Minister Browne emphasised this priority as he announced the continuation of the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant to 2030.
Minister Browne pointed out that he was also introducing, as part of the scheme, a new enhanced support package of up to €140,000 to bring vacant ‘above shop’ space in our cities, towns and villages into use as homes.
The new grant supports the conversion of upper floors that have been vacant for at least two years, with funding of up to €95,000 for a single unit and additional top-ups where multiple homes are delivered. A further €5,000 is available for professional advice a barrier that previously stalled many conversions at feasibility stage.
Cllr Walsh added, “We all know there are areas across Sligo which need a new lease of life. This grant will provide that lifeline. It will also have a positive impact on the provision of more homes.
“Every time we bring residents back to our town centres, we strengthen local businesses, increase footfall and improve overall safety.”
Cllr Walsh concluded by saying, “Fine Gael has always believed in practical solutions to housing in Ireland. This grant is a clear example of that approach by taking under-used space and turning it into affordable homes for families and communities in Sligo.”
