Cllr Fergal Nealon has welcomed the announcement of funding for a feasibility study to examine the potential development of a tidal swimming pool at Strandhill, secured under the Town and Village Scheme.

The allocation of €49,875 will support a detailed assessment of whether a tidal pool could provide a safer swimming option in Strandhill, where strong currents and challenging sea conditions have long been a concern for locals and visitors.

Cllr. Nealon said he has been actively promoting and progressing the idea for a tidal pool in Strandhill for some time, engaging with officials and advocating strongly for the project to be considered under national funding streams.

“Strandhill is one of our greatest natural assets, but it’s no secret that swimming conditions can be dangerous,” said Cllr Nealon. “I have consistently pushed the case for exploring a tidal pool as a safer alternative, and I’m delighted to see this feasibility study approved. This funding allows us to properly assess the idea and see if it can be delivered in a way that is safe, environmentally responsible, and beneficial to the community.”

The feasibility study will examine site suitability, coastal engineering requirements, environmental impacts, safety considerations, and projected costs. It will also consider how a tidal pool could be used by local residents, families, older swimmers and year-round sea swimmers.

Cllr Nealon emphasised that the study is about gathering evidence and options, rather than making any final commitment.

“This is a sensible and responsible next step. It ensures that any future decisions are based on expert analysis and proper planning. If the study shows the project is viable, it could deliver real benefits in terms of health, wellbeing and safer access to the sea.”

He also acknowledged the support of local stakeholders and council officials in progressing the application.

“I will continue to work closely with the community and with council colleagues to make sure Strandhill’s interests are fully represented as this study progresses.”
