‘For the people who use this road every day, road safety is an immediate issue’ – call for interim measures on N15
The Sligo ChampionFianna Fáil Councillor Dr Edel McSharry has welcomed confirmation that the N15 Cloyspara Road Safety Improvement Scheme is progressing, while stressing that local communities must remain at the heart of the decision-making process and that every effort should be made to improve road safety before the full scheme is delivered.
At the recent meeting of the Sligo–Drumcliffe Municipal District, Cllr McSharry sought an update on the current status of the N15 safety improvement works, the public consultation process, the issues raised by local residents, and the anticipated timeline for delivery.
In response, Sligo County Council confirmed that the scheme is currently at an early stage of development. Public consultation has recently concluded, with submissions now being assessed by the Sligo Regional Design Office in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland. A preferred option is expected to be identified in early 2027, with construction currently anticipated during 2028.
Cllr McSharry said the update demonstrates positive progress on one of the region’s most important transport corridors.
“I welcome the fact that this safety scheme project is moving forward. This is a significant route for local communities, businesses, agriculture, tourism and everyone travelling to and from Sligo.”
She said that while the N15 is now on the national development plan and this long-term upgrade is encouraging, safety cannot wait until construction begins which will be a significant amount of time
“For the people who use this road every day, road safety is an immediate issue. While the overall improvement scheme is progressing, we must continue to examine what interim measures can be introduced to reduce risk and improve safety over the coming months and years.”
Cllr McSharry also highlighted the importance of ensuring that the views of local residents, landowners and road users genuinely shape the final design.
“Meaningful consultation is essential. Local people understand this road better than anyone, and their knowledge and experience should help inform the final proposals. It is important that the consultation process is thorough, transparent and that all submissions are carefully considered before decisions are made.”
The Council confirmed that proposals under consideration may include changes to local junctions where required to improve safety, with any such changes requiring the approval of elected members.
Cllr McSharry said achieving the right balance between improved road safety and maintaining appropriate local access would be critical as the project develops.
“This is about delivering the safest possible road while ensuring that communities remain connected. By working closely with residents, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Sligo County Council, I am confident we can develop a scheme that significantly improves safety while responding to the needs of the communities who live and work along the route.”
She added that she will continue to monitor the progress of the scheme and advocate for practical safety improvements wherever possible until the full project is delivered.
