The sport of paddle has seen a huge upsurge in its popularity in recent times and there are now calls to bring it to Sligo. Played only in doubles form and on a court about a third the size of a tennis court, paddle can be enjoyed by players of all abilities and ages and the national body are hoping to establish a presence nationwide.

The September meeting of Sligo County Council heard tjat Padel 360 Ireland are seeking partnerships with County Councils nationwide to build and manage new clubs throughout the country.

In a motion before the meeting, Cllr Dara Mulvey called on the council to contact Paddle 360 Ireland.

Cllr Mulvey said, “Padel is often described as a mixture of tennis and squash and it is now the fastest growing sport in the world. It is a great form of exercise regardless of age or physical ability, allowing more people to get active. Excellent space utilisation is made possible by the small court relative to tennis.”

Referring to how popular Padel has been elsewhere Cllr Mulvey said, “Players see it as a great way to meet new people while keeping fit and promotes positive mental health. The massive success of this sport has been demonstrated in Dublin’s Bushy Park that is operating in a financially self-sufficient way and is considerably over subscribed.”

Cllr Mulvey told the meeting Padel 360 Ireland are looking for space in the region of 2,000 square metres.

Cllr Ann Higgins voiced her support saying, “I agree with the motion but we have to remember there are other sports looking for facilities.”
