The much anticipated and long awaited Eastern Garavogue Bridge has taken another step closer with Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien TD officially signing off on the contract to proceed with the bridge and approach roads project in Sligo.

Local TDs and Ministers of State, Frank Feighan and Marian both warmly welcomed the announcement as they highlighted the benefits the completed project will bring to Sligo.

“This is another vital piece of infrastructure for the town of Sligo which will further open up the arteries for private vehicles, public transport and commercial vehicles providing another access point to UCH Sligo and the ATU campus at Ballinode,” said Minister Feighan.

Minister Harkin emphasised that the project would deliver long-term improvements in traffic management, connectivity, and active travel options, supporting both local residents and economic development.

“I welcome the Transport Minister’s approval of this important project. The Eastern Garavogue Bridge and its associated road improvements will significantly enhance connectivity across Sligo, reduce congestion, and provide modern, safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. It will support future growth, improve access for businesses and communities, and contribute to a more sustainable and efficient transport network.”

She added that the combination of upgraded roads and enhanced active travel routes will deliver meaningful benefits for commuters, families, and local enterprises.

The new bridge is described on the Local Authority’s website as, “A long-awaited opportunity for Sligo to take a significant step towards improving its transport network, enhancing connectivity, promoting sustainable transport and active travel, and supporting local economic development.”

The scheme will include approximately 1.8 kilometres of new road north of the Garavogue River, upgrades to 0.8 kilometres of existing road south of the river, 3.5 kilometres of new cycle tracks and footpaths, and improvements to a further 2.2 kilometres of existing walking and cycling infrastructure.

The final plan is a 70-metre single-span tied arch bridge with a slender, central steel arch rib rising nearly 35 metres above the river deck.

“Now that the Minister has given the ‘green light’ detailed tender documents can be issued,” added Minister Feighan.

Construction and implementation work is expected to commence in Q4 2026 while a website dedicated to the project is expected to be launched in the coming month. The website will provide the public with accurate, up-to-date information regarding the project’s development.

The work and input of Minister O’Brien as well as local elected representatives was acknowledged by Minister Feighan who said, “In conclusion I wish to thank Minister O’Brien who was very supportive of this project and of course to my government colleagues, Minister Marian Harkin and Eamon Scanlon TD.

Stressing the importance of local representatives working together for the good of the community he added, “We worked as a team to ensure this development progressed and we will continue to highlight and seek delivery of other key transport projects for the Sligo Leitrim constituency to improve our access into Sligo town and the north west region,” concluded Minister Feighan.
