Dog-free walking route proposed in Sligo to support people with special needs
The Sligo ChampionThe June meeting of Sligo County Council heard calls for a dog-free walking route to be introduced for the benefit of those with special needs.
Cllr Dara Mulvey noted incidents of people becoming distressed when encountering dogs off-lead with his motion stating, “County Sligo is fortunate to have around 60 wonderful public walking trails, which are a tremendous community asset. However, there have been incidents where individuals with special needs, while out on accompanied walks, have become extremely distressed when encountering dogs that are off their leads. A designated, dog-free walking route would provide a safe, predictable environment and would greatly support the well-being and confidence of those who rely on such spaces.”
Speaking to the motion Cllr Mulvey commented, “To encounter a large or smaller dog, for a person with special needs, it knocks them off their enjoyment. They deserve a safe space where they can walk without intimidation.”
Cllr Mulvey added, “We all love our pets, but there are plenty of routes for them. There are 60 wonderful walking routes, to give one would be a wonderful start.”
The motion received the backing of Cllr Thomas Walsh who said, “It would be good to see one in every part of the county, to get one in town would be a good start.”
Cllr Arthur Gibbons gave a cautious welcome to the motion when he said, “I support in theory. What about guide dogs or support dogs? The concept of the motion is very good. None of us know what it is really like for people with disabilities. There needs to be input from people with disabilities. You know their motto - ‘nothing about us without us’.”
Director of Services Jim Molloy noted prior to any dog-free walking route being created, “There would be consultation regarding making a change to by-laws.”
The debate concluded with Cllr Mulvey noting, “Dogs running free are the issue and causing a problem. If this works it would allow people to go for a walk fear free.”
