Calls have been made for a walkway between Cliffoney and Mullaghmore.

The issue was raised a meeting of the municipal district of Sligo/Drumcliffe with Cllr Donal Gilroy informing the meeting the existing “Gravel path doesn’t meet any national standards.”

In his motion Cllr Gilroy proposed that Sligo County Council provide a simple, safe walking route from Cliffoney to Mullaghmore along the western side of the road where there is currently a gravel track that requires regular maintenance.

Addressing the meeting Cllr Gilroy said, “Twice a year it gets cut by a tractor. Every five to six years it gets sprayed which gets everyone in trouble.”

Cllr Gilroy asked that the path be maintained, noting that cars travel in excess of 80kpm in close proximity to the path.

He added, “If we could come up with a maintenance plan rather than a tractor it would maintain the biodiversity. It is somewhere to keep children off the road. If someone is injured will we still be blamed because we put it in 20 years ago.”

Supporting the motion Cllr Marie Casserly noted, “It is a very busy route during the summer. Would it be possible to have the speed reduced, children and teenagers use it a lot.”
