Council meeting to seek update on long awaited improvement works on ‘dangerous’ section of N59 from Sligo to Ballina
The Sligo ChampionA motion before the upcoming monthly meeting of Sligo County Council will call for an update an update on the long awaited improvement works needed at Lugawarry along the busy N59 road from Ballisodare towards West Sligo following yet more accidents along this stretch.
Ahead of next week’s meeting Cllr Dara Mulvey said, “Local residents and road users who travel this very busy road daily face dangers along this dangerous section of road, which is the main artery from the west coast into Sligo and onto the N4, yet Transport infrastructure Ireland seem to have forgotten about this stretch of road."
“I have tabled a motion for the upcoming County Council meeting seeking an update on this urgent issue stated Cllr Dara Mulvey.
“There are also major concerns about the junctions of Coney and Stonehall, two other treacherous and blind junctions, where there has been a minimum of 10 accidents at the coney junction this year alone, most recently at the start of November.”
Referring to some of the previous accidents that have occurred on the road, Cllr Mulvey asked if it will take a fatality before matters are rectified.
“Drivers can also see remnants of previous crashes, debris of cars and a snapped Eircom pole along the roadside. Now, for whatever reason the N59 project seems to have vanished off the raider, but is it going to take a fatality on one of those bends or junctions before this vital piece of infrastructure is realigned and upgraded,” concluded Cllr Mulvey.
