Confirmation from Sligo County Council that a letter of acceptance has issued for the appointment of Jons Civil Engineering Limited as contractor for the Sligo Public Realm Enhancement Scheme has been welcomed by Cllr Fergal Nealon.

Cllr Nealon said the development marks a significant milestone for the project and represents an important investment in the future of Sligo town.

“This is very positive news for Sligo,” Councillor Nealon said. “The appointment of a contractor brings this flagship public realm project another major step closer to delivery, with works due to commence early this year. It is something many businesses, residents, and visitors have been looking forward to.”

Cllr Nealon explained that the coming weeks will allow the contractor to prepare construction methodologies, carry out surveys and investigations, order long-lead materials, and establish site compounds and offices ahead of construction.

“The commitment to ongoing communication with stakeholders is particularly welcome,” he said. “The provision of a dedicated Public Liaison Officer during the construction phase will be crucial in supporting businesses, residents, and members of the public throughout the works.”

Councillor Nealon also acknowledged the scale and importance of the project for the town centre.

“This scheme will significantly enhance the public realm in Sligo, improving accessibility, attractiveness, and the overall experience of the town centre. It represents a long-term investment in Sligo’s economic vitality and quality of life.”

He concluded by thanking Sligo County Council officials and all stakeholders involved in progressing the scheme to this stage and said he looks forward to seeing works commence in the coming months.
