An update provided by the Sligo County Council Executive in relation to the delivery of an outdoor skatepark in Cleveragh was warmly welcomed by Councillors at the June meeting of Sligo County Council with Cllr Thomas Walsh saying, “It is a win-win for everyone involved.”

Speaking to his motion, Sligo Drumcliffe representative, Cllr Thomas Walsh confirmed that an application has been submitted for funding for phase 2 of the Cleveragh Masterplan.

In reply to Cllr Walsh’s motion seeking an update on the facility, it was stated, On May 1, Sligo County Council submitted a comprehensive funding application under the Town and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund, Category 1B, seeking funding support for the implementation of Cleveragh Regional Park masterplan.

Welcoming the reply, Cllr Walsh referred to the “Physical, mental and social benefits,” adding, “It puts skaters into a safe space.”

The provision of support funding for the design, supply and installation of a new concrete skate park facility for Sligo at Cleveragh Regional Park was included as one of the key elements of the funding submission as well as other recreational items.

Phase 1 will get underway shortly and a contractor has been appointed. These works will provide a Learn to Cycle Facility. €112,500 was allocated in November 2025 for the Learn to Cycle facility under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

The masterplan for Cleveragh, which successfully passed the Part 8 planning process (a specific procedure for local authority developments) last September includes a new Playground and playing courts – basketball and multi-use courts, a Learn-to-cycle facility, pump track and skatepark, Car parking, access road and bicycle parking spaces, sustainable drainage systems, public lighting and floodlighting, and a fenced dog off-leash area.

Welcoming the update, Cllr Walsh said, “This is something I have pushed for at Cleveragh for many years now, and I welcome that it has taken a key step forward.”

The motion was supported by Cllr Fergal Nealon who said the project is, “Vital for our young citizens. I have to commend Micheal Condron, when he gets behind something it gets delivered.”

It is hoped that Sligo County Council will receive feedback on the funding submission in Q3, 2026.
