Calls for provision of lifeguard at Rosses Point tidal pool
The Sligo ChampionAt the September meeting of Sligo-Drumcliff Municipal District the local authority was asked to explore the provision of a lifeguard at the Rosses Point tidal pool.
In her motion Cllr Edel McSharry said, “There is a case to begin the designation process without delay.”
Cllr McSharry told the meeting that swimming in the tidal pool is safer than in the open sea but nevertheless members of the public have gotten into difficulty and required the assistance of the RNLI and the search and rescue helicopter.
Cllr McSharry added, “Rosses Point is a flagship amenity across Sligo and it is important that we have safe swimming with lifeguard cover.”
Cllr Donal Gilroy sounded a note of caution when he said, “The fact that it is adjacent to Dead man’s Point, they might not want people bathing there. The bigger issue is to stop people going left from the tidal pool. It is not safe unless you know what you are doing.”
Cllr Thomas Healy referenced a nearby project at Gibraltar and asked could lessons learned from that development be used to further matters at the tidal pool.
The issue of funding for lifeguards and recruiting lifeguards was also raised with Cllr Thomas Walsh informing the meeting training for lifeguards is paid for by the County Council.
