Cllr Marie Casserly has called on the Government to commit to a €15 million annual investment in the Irish Post Office Network, recognising its vital role in sustaining local communities, supporting small businesses, and delivering essential services across the country.

At the October meeting of Sligo County Council, Cllr Casserly tabled a motion urging Government action to secure the future of Post Offices, many of which are the last remaining providers of financial and Government services in rural towns and villages.

“The Irish Post Office Network processes 84 million transactions each year, with a total value of €14 billion,” Cllr. Casserly said.

“This includes €7bn in welfare cash payments, which are a lifeline for individuals and families across the country. In many communities, the Post Office is the only service available for people without access to online platforms, playing a crucial role in combating social exclusion.”

She also highlighted the significant role Post Offices play in supporting local business: “Over 540 Post Offices operate in areas without a bank within 5km. They provide vital financial and banking services to small and micro businesses, helping to keep money circulating in the local economy and driving community resilience.”

Cllr. Casserly warned that the closure of Post Offices would have a devastating impact on rural Ireland, particularly on vulnerable individuals and local economies.

“We cannot allow this essential community infrastructure to wither away. The Government must step up and ensure the long-term sustainability of our Post Office Network. A €15 million annual investment is a small price to pay for the enormous social and economic value delivered by Post Offices nationwide.”
