Calls for Connaughton Road car park to be reopened
The Sligo ChampionA motion submitted by Cllr Tom MacSharry at this month’s meeting of the Borough District of Sligo sought to reopen Connaughton Rd car park immediately to alleviate the perceived issue of a lack of car parking spaces in the town.
Addressing the meeting Cllr MacSharry said, “I ask that the Council give it consideration, especially in the run up to Christmas. If it could be opened, even on a temporary basis it would be very welcome.” Cllr Fergal Nealon gave his backing to the motion saying, “If you’re not from town, you’re going to get so frustrated and go elsewhere. We need to use common sense.”
Cllr Ann Higgins agreed with the need for additional car parking spaces saying, “There is a significant issue with the lack of car parking spaces in Sligo. We’re not quite there yet with public transport provision.”
Cllr Gino O’Boyle was asked how many spaces would be created with the re-opening of the car park. “Would it be 40 or 50”
In reply Cllr O’Boyle was told, “Less.”
A response from the Sligo County Council executive said, “If you go into The Mall car park at any time, I guarantee you will get spaces.”
The meeting heard there are “More car parking spaces per head of capita in Sligo than most similar sized towns.”
The debate concluded with Cllr MacSharry saying, “This is a solution to a serious problem and it is unfortunate the Council won’t reconsider.”
