Ban on HGVs in parts of Sligo town to come into effect after Garda approval
The Sligo ChampionWeight restrictions to ban Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) from entering the Lower East Ward area of Sligo town have been approved by An Garda Síochána. It is expected that the necessary weight restriction signage, prohibiting Heavy Goods Vehicles in excess of 7.5 Tonnes, will be erected in the coming weeks.
Welcoming the decision, Cllr Declan Bree, who has been campaigning for the introduction of the ban said “It has been almost five years since I first tabled a motion seeking to prohibit HGVs from using the road network through the Cranmore housing estate, Martin Savage Terrace and Doorly Park housing estates and Cleveragh Drive.
“With the exception of a number of supermarkets and the business park in Cleveragh, the area in question is largely residential. The regulations will of course allow HGVs to make local deliveries.
“Residents of the area were most anxious to have the HGV ban in place in advance of the new Eastern bridge being built.
“The residents have been seeking the ban because of potential issues relating to pedestrian safety along with concerns relating to infrastructural damage, pollution and noise emissions.
“I warmly welcome the restrictions. I wish to acknowledge the support I received from Council colleagues on this issue and I also wish to thank the Councils’ Roads Department and the traffic management section of an Garda Síochána.” Cllr Bree said.
