The recent announcement of major investment in third level education recently announced for Castlebar at the site of the Historic Barracks building has been welcomed by Cllr Dara Mulvey but the Coolaney based local representative has highlighted the need for capital expenditure at North Connaught College Tubbercurry which he feels has ample space for further expansion.

“North Connaught College situated alongside the N17 is a widely used and respected as a centre of education in South Sligo, but with further increased capital investment, so much more could be done at this location stated the former Chairperson of North Connaught College and current board member of MSLETB having raised this issue at a recent meeting of MSLETB.”

Cllr Mulvey pointed to the potential for population growth in the region as a reason for further investments saying, “Recent very welcome announcements of additional housing to be built in Bellaghy, Ballymote, and Tubbercurry strongly suggest that there will be more classroom space required at North Connaught College. Broadening access to third level education is necessary to make it more affordable for parents and students. There is plenty of land attached to North Connaught College Tubbercurry to expand the campus and widen the array of courses. Such an investment is needed and will pay dividends for generations to come south Sligo.
