The proposed Carraroe to Cuilbeg Active Travel Scheme has moved to the next stage as the long running campaign to introduce a safer shared space for all road users in the area advances to the planning stage of the development.

The project will start at the junction of Carraroe and the Ballygawley road and end at the Cuilbeg sports facility.

The scheme will include a new tabletop at the junction, new pedestrian crossings, road narrowing, junction tightening, wider shared path and upgraded public lighting. The purpose of the works is to create a safe environment for all current users and encourage new users along this section of road.

Welcoming the advancement in the scheme, Cllr Thomas Walsh, said, “This has been a serious safety issue for many years now. We have spent three years working on this scheme. I want to thank our engineering staff in Sligo County Council, Brendan Lynch and Paul O’Rourke for their work to date. I also want to thank the Harte family in Carraroe who have worked with us to help us deliver this scheme.

“This infrastructure has been a priority for the people of Carraroe and I am delighted to have played my part in its progression and delivery. €205,000 was allocated from Government in 2025 to support this scheme progressing. It is one of four schemes in Sligo that are moving through the National Transport Authority phases.”

The project details will be published online on Wednesday, September 3. Submissions can be made once the consultation is live and it will close at 4pm on Wednesday, October 1.

Cllr Walsh added, “I encourage you all to make a submission on the design and give us your feedback; community groups, road users, children in Carraroe National School, walkers and cyclists”.
