Work begins on removal of large ESB pole in Navan

A pedestrian safety issue raised almost two years ago by a Navan councillor is now being addressed, as works have officially commenced to remove a large ESB pole in the town.
The development follows a motion proposed in December 2023 by Cllr. Yemi Adenuga, who called on Meath County Council to engage with the relevant authorities to tackle “the obstructing pole” in the middle of footpath at Fair Green, Navan—directly across from St. Anne’s Loreto Primary School.
The issue was brought to her attention by concerned parents, who highlighted the pole’s location beside a pedestrian crossing as a serious safety risk for children and other footpath users.
Taking to social media this weekend, the Fine Gael councillor said the works have officially begun under Contract No. 5 under the Navan 2030 public realm upgrade. As part of the works, the pole is set to be removed and all overhead ESB cables in the area will be relocated underground.
Cllr Adenuga said: “New broadband infrastructure and multi-utility ducting will be installed. Modern, safer footpaths will be laid, not just at Fair Green but in other areas of Navan too.”
She welcomed the update and expressed her appreciation for the action taken by the council.
She said: “This motion helped inform a wider review of footpath obstructions, and I’m pleased to see Meath County Council acting on this across the town.”
She also thanked the Active Travel team at Meath County Council for progressing the motion and supporting the goal of creating “a safer, more accessible Navan for everyone”.
