Two-week Meath road closure to begin in order to facilitate major water upgrade

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Two weeks of road closures are set to facilitate a new raw water source at a groundwater well site located in Posseckstown in Meath, as part of a major project to upgrade Drumconrath’s water supply.

Uisce Éireann said the closures will affect the L-7410-0 Cregg and L-74033-0 Posseckstown roads from Monday, February 9 to Monday February 23, 2026, operating 24 hours a day.

Diversion routes will be clearly signposted, and local and emergency access will be maintained throughout the works.

The project includes the construction of a new water main to transport raw water from the Posseckstown source to the Drumconrath Water Treatment Plant, which serves over 1,200 homes and businesses.

The existing treatment facilities at the plant will also be upgraded as part of the multi-million Euro investment, designed to improve the resilience and security of the local water supply.

John McElwaine, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “The extended road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of our contractors, road users and the general public while works are underway.”

“We acknowledge that these works may cause some disruption while in progress and thank customers for their patience.”

Speaking about the project, Mr McElwaine added: “This major upgrade to the Drumconrath Water Treatment Plant is a crucial investment in the future of the community.

“By securing a new groundwater source and enhancing the treatment facilities, we are ensuring a safe, secure, and resilient water supply for homes and businesses in Drumconrath and surrounding areas.”

“This project not only supports compliance with drinking water standards but also lays the foundation for social and economic growth.”

Works are expected to be completed by late 2026. The Drumconrath water scheme is currently included on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List, which identifies water supplies requiring improvement.
