Toy swap event in Meath to cut down on waste and costs this Christmas

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

A community-led initiative is aiming to put sustainability at the heart of the festive season by encouraging families to swap pre-loved toys instead of buying new ones.

The Toy Library will host one of its Circular Christmas Swap and Play events at Simonstown Gaels in Navan.

Supported by Meath County Council, the free event invites families to exchange toys, enjoy creative activities and learn simple ways to reduce waste at Christmas.

Attendees can bring up to five good-quality, clean and complete toys to donate or swap. However, organisers have said that no donation is required to take home a toy. Any leftover items will be donated to local charities and libraries.

The afternoon will also feature a Christmas-themed eco-crafting corner, vegan and plastic-free temporary tattoos, a “Teddy Bear Hub” for teddy check-ups, a Christmas wishing tree, cookies, and a visit from a “Circular Santa” who will encourage children to think about sustainable celebrations.

Angela Loughran, Community Climate Action Officer for Meath County Council, said: “When we heard about the work being carried out by The Toy Library we wanted to help out, as it is important to support any effort to cut down on plastic waste.”

"We are really looking forward to the Swap and Play event in Simonstown, where people can bring toys that are in good condition and swap them with others.”

"There will be a festive atmosphere for children and parents to enjoy, and I would like to invite people from around Meath to pop in and see what’s on offer,” she added.

The Toy Library, a social enterprise launched in June 2024 that encourages families to recirculate toys instead of purchasing new ones, describes the event as “the perfect occasion to have a great time while making good for your wallet and the planet.”

The Navan event will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, from 11am to 2pm.
