Speed ramp needed outside national school in Meath

A speed ramp is needed outside of a national school in Meath, a local councillor has said.
At the October meeting of Ratoath Municipal District, Sinn Féin Councillor Fionnan Blake called on Meath County Council to install a speed ramp outside St Seachnall’s National School in Dunshaughlin, as a traffic-calming measure to improve safety for pupils, parents, and local residents.
Cllr Blake urged that a ramp be placed “on the Dublin side of the front gate of St Seachnall’s National School” to reduce vehicle speeds in the busy area, particularly during school drop-off and collection times.
The motion highlights growing concern about road safety around the school, where heavy traffic and speeding vehicles have been an ongoing issue for residents and parents.
In response, Meath County Council’s Transportation Section confirmed that it is currently drafting a new Traffic Calming Policy for the county.
The policy will set out detailed criteria for assessing and implementing traffic-calming measures aimed at reducing the negative impacts of speed and high traffic volumes on local roads.
According to the council, the policy will allow for the development of a structured programme of schemes and for annual funding to be sought.
Once adopted, all requests for traffic-calming measures — including Cllr Blake’s proposal — will be assessed based on the new criteria, and “appropriate actions” will be taken in line with the policy.
