Signage pilot scheme suggested to improve ‘chaotic congestion’ on Navan’s junction

A proposal to introduce a traffic management pilot scheme at one of Navan’s busiest junctions has been made in an effort to tackle ongoing congestion in the area.

At the October meeting of Navan Municipal District, Independent Councillor Francis Deane called for a trial “no right turn” signage system for vehicles approaching the Willows–Old Kilcarne junction from Cannistown.

“As vehicles approach the Willows–Old Kilcarne junction from Cannistown, have ‘no right turn’. Instead, ‘left turn only’ and turn onto the N3 from the roundabout,” he said in his motion.

“Congestion here can be chaotic, especially for school-going traffic,” Cllr Deane added.

The junction, located between the R147 and L-4009 (Boynehill), is known for heavy traffic, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times.

In response, the Transportation Section of Meath County Council confirmed that traffic data will be collected at the site to assess current volumes and movement patterns.

The results will inform whether changes to the junction layout are necessary to improve traffic flow and safety.

Council officials said that, if the findings support intervention, a temporary pilot scheme — such as the one proposed by Cllr Deane — could be implemented before any permanent redesign is considered.
