Several weeks of road closures hit Meath as major water upgrade gets underway

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Road closures expected to last several weeks have begun in Drumconrath as Uisce Éireann carries out a major upgrade to the village’s water supply.

The project, a multi-million euro investment, includes the development of a new groundwater source at Posseckstown, the installation of a new water main to transport raw water to the treatment plant, and upgrades to existing water treatment facilities.

The plant currently supplies over 1,200 customers in Drumconrath and surrounding areas.

To facilitate the works, Meath County Council has granted temporary closures on the L-7410-0 Cregg and L-74033-0 Posseckstown roads in Nobber, Co Meath. The closures are in effect 24 hours a day from Monday, January 5 until Monday, February 9, 2026.

Diversion routes will be “clearly signposted”, and local and emergency access will be maintained throughout.

John McElwaine, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “The road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of our contractors, road users and the general public while works are underway. We acknowledge that these works may cause some disruption while in progress and thank customers for their patience.”

Speaking about the project, Mr McElwaine said the upgrade to the Drumconrath Water Treatment Plant is a “crucial investment” in the future of the community.

“By securing a new groundwater source and enhancing the treatment facilities, we are ensuring a safe, secure, and resilient water supply for homes and businesses in Drumconrath and surrounding areas,” he said.

“This project not only supports compliance with drinking water standards but also lays the foundation for social and economic growth.”

Construction is carrying out the project works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, which are expected to be completed in late 2026.

The current water scheme is included on the Environmental Protection Agency's Remedial Action List (RAL), which identifies water supplies that need improvement.
