Safety improvements planned for busy Garlow Cross Junction in Meath

A speed survey and safety audit of Garlow Cross Junction in Meath have been undertaken by Meath County Council to assess the potential for further traffic calming measures in the area.
According to Aontú Councillor Emer Tóibín, a number of important upgrades have already been carried out, including the installation of bollards, enhanced road markings, road studs, and new LED public lighting at the junction.
She said the works are part of an ongoing effort to make Garlow Cross safer for all road users.
“As we know, this junction has, for many years, been associated with fatal accidents, collisions, and countless near misses,” said Cllr Tóibín.
“It is also a particularly busy area for commuters who access bus services at this cross. Each day, scores of schoolchildren are collected and dropped off here.”
She added that further safety improvements would help reassure parents, especially as winter approaches.
“Introducing additional traffic calming measures would give significant peace of mind to parents as well, especially as we approach the darker winter evenings and mornings,” she said.
Plans are in place to install concrete traffic islands on both approach roads to the cross next year, subject to funding.
Cllr Tóibín confirmed she has requested a speed reduction bye-law and will be submitting a proposal to Meath County Council to reduce the speed limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h at the junction.
“This proposal will be reviewed by the Council’s Road Safety Officer and considered by Elected Members in due course,” she said.
At present, there are no plans to install a traffic light management system at the junction.
Cllr Tóibín noted that there are hopes to add capacity to the Garlow Cross Park and Ride facility which was opened in 2023.
“It continues to be of great benefit to commuters,” she added.
