Safety concerns grow at Meath ‘black spot’ junction following recent crashes

A Meath councillor has called on the council to implement urgent road safety measures at Mounthanover Junction on the Beamore Road following two further car crashes in recent days.

East Meath Fianna Fáil Councillor Stephen McKee described the junction as a “black spot” and said accidents continue despite previous interventions.

“I have been raising road safety issues at Mounthanover Junction over a period of time now, and the accidents at this black spot only continue, with two more crashes in recent days,” he said.

Cllr McKee said that the council had previously added extra “Stop” signage further back from the junction and repainted road markings, but said more action is needed.

“The council tells me that they have applied for funding under the Safety Improvement Works Scheme and that Mounthanover Junction will be considered once funding is made available by the Department of Transport,” he said.

He called for immediate measures to improve safety, including additional signage, public lighting, and a review of the link road at the top of the junction.

“Something urgently needs to be done as there are simply too many accidents happening at the junction. At a minimum, additional road signage is needed and I think closing the link road at the top is worth looking at again to see if it would make a difference. Public lighting is also needed to improve visibility,” Cllr McKee said.

He added that any measures should ensure both road safety and continued ease of access for drivers.

“We need to ensure that measures taken achieve both road safety and ensure continued ease of access.”
