Road safety measures needed in Meath estates to address ‘dangerous speeding and antisocial driving’

Residents of Foxlodge Manor and Foxlodge Woods in Meath may soon see long-awaited progress on road safety, following a motion submitted to the Ratoath Municipal District.

At the October meeting, Fianna Fáil Councillor Caroline O'Reilly called on Meath County Council to carry out an “immediate traffic survey” in both estates, with a view to installing traffic-calming ramps to address persistent speeding and dangerous driving.

“I have made repeated representations on this issue since April, yet residents continue to report dangerous speeding and antisocial driving in the estate,” Cllr O’Reilly said.

“A survey and follow-up action must now be prioritised without further delay.”

In response, the Council’s Transportation Section confirmed that it is currently drafting a Traffic Calming Policy for the county.

The forthcoming policy will set out detailed criteria for assessing and implementing traffic-calming measures aimed at improving road safety and reducing the impact of excessive speed and vehicle volumes.

Once adopted, all requests for traffic-calming interventions will be reviewed under the new framework, with Foxlodge Manor and Foxlodge Woods already added to the list of locations for assessment, the local authority said.

“Traffic Calming aims to improve road safety and enhance the environment for all road users and allows for a programme of schemes to be developed and to seek annual funding,” they added.
