Push for safe and ‘permanent’ pathway between East Meath estates

A call has been made for a safe, accessible and permanent pedestrian link between two housing estates in East Meath.
At the October meeting of Laytown-Bettystown, Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Stephen McKee submitted a motion seeking to improve connectivity and pedestrian permeability between the Avourwen and Lagavooren Manor estates.
In response, Meath County Council said their Active Travel section will explore the feasibility of a formal route once construction of Avourwen is completed and the estate is officially taken in charge.
They added that, if feasible, funding could be sought from the National Transport Authority (NTA) to progress the project.
Meanwhile the Municipal District Engineer will work with residents and elected representatives to develop a short-term plan of action.
Speaking afterwards, Cllr McKee, who has been advocating for a safe pathway between the estates, said: “I am encouraged by this and will work with residents and the Council to ensure that this is done soon and in the right manner, particularly as we head into the Winter months.
“The access between both estates is an established one and it is important that it is tidied up for the benefit of all residents as soon as possible.”
