Push for action on Swan Lane safety works in Meath

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Efforts to have a lane added to Meath County Council’s priority list for remedial road works are proving more “difficult” than expected, according to Aontú Councillor Emer Tóibín.

Cllr Tóibín said she has been engaging with residents and Council officials in recent months in an attempt to secure progress on Swan Lane.

“Getting Swan Lane included on the priority list for remedial works is proving more difficult than I had hoped,” she said.

The councillor thanked local residents who have contacted the Council to highlight safety concerns.

She added that she has encouraged residents to email the transport department on the issue.

“I really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to do so. That kind of consistent community pressure is important and does make a difference over time.”

Cllr Tóibín said she has held “numerous” discussions with Council engineers, who have indicated that Swan Lane will be assessed alongside other potential road safety projects in “due course".

“The policy document that sets out how roads are prioritised for inclusion is still being finalised,” she said.

“Like many of you, I’ve suggested road cushions as a possible solution, but these need to be matched with adequate street lighting, which adds a significant cost.”

“I’ll be following up to try and get more clarity on what’s ahead, even if the process looks like it may be a long one.”

Meanwhile a new engineer has now been assigned to the project area.
