Progress on long-awaited CCTV scheme for Navan

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Significant progress has been made on the rollout of the CCTV network in Navan, with the system now moving closer to full operation following years of planning and delay.

Authorisation for the use of the system was granted to Meath County Council by the Garda Commissioner in February, four years after the planning process for the extension of the scheme concluded in late 2022.

Since then, work has been underway to bring the existing infrastructure into operation.

According to Aontú councillor Emer Tóibín, a meeting between the Council and An Garda Síochána has taken place to address the practical running of the network, including system controls, maintenance, and future expansion.

At present, 33 CCTV locations have been installed across Navan, with a further five currently under construction. In total, 103 cameras are in place across these sites.

However, Cllr Tóibín said there is currently no CCTV coverage in Johnstown.

“It is worth noting that Johnstown currently has no CCTV locations, as the existing cameras were largely installed as part of other town and road improvement schemes,” she said.

“As the network develops further, installation and activation in Johnstown will proceed.”

“Overall, it is encouraging to see this progress, and I look forward to the system becoming fully operational in the near future to support community safety in Navan and Johnstown and assist Navan Gardaí,” Cllr Tóibín added.
