Plans for a long awaited community amenities project in Meath expected before year-end

Navan councillors will receive the detailed plans for the long-awaited Johnstown Community Amenities (JCA) project in Meath before the end of the year — but no provision has been made for a community centre, an Aontú councillor has said.

Once reviewed by elected members, the plans are expected to proceed to public consultation, giving residents of Johnstown an opportunity to share their views on the proposed development.

The project covers a four-acre site near Dunville and represents a significant investment in local recreation and open space. A newly released site map and accompanying graphic highlight a wide range of proposed facilities designed to serve the growing Johnstown community.

However, Councillor Emer Tóibín has noted that no provision has been made for a community centre within the JCA site.

“The Council have stated their intention to convert Mrs. Butterly’s House in Old Johnstown Village into a community centre as part of the planned public realm redevelopment there,” she said.

Cllr Tóibín added that during the Council’s presentation of the conceptual plans earlier this summer, several recommendations were made to enhance the project. These included a wider range of playground equipment, additional parking and picnic benches, bike parking racks, and outdoor gym facilities suitable for all ages.

“While we all welcome the imminent planning application, there is no doubt in my mind that a purpose-built, modern community centre for Johnstown is essential to serve the growing population and to complete this amenities project in full.”

Meanwhile, An Bord Pleanála is currently considering separate proposals for substantial new housing and a large community centre in Farganstown.
