By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Meath County Council has formally received 19 requests as part of the process to secure a nomination in the 2025 presidential election.

The council confirmed that it is now checking the eligibility of those who submitted these requests. Once this stage is complete, the full list of candidates due to present before councillors will be made available, a spokesperson for the local authority said.

A special meeting of Meath County Council is scheduled for Monday, September 22, 2025, at 9.30am to consider the nomination of candidates.

Under election rules, candidates can be nominated either through the support of at least 20 Oireachtas members or with the backing of four local authorities. Meath is among several councils across the country currently reviewing requests.

Meanwhile, the nomination window officially will remain open until midday on September 24, 2025, ahead of election day on October 24, 2025.
