New Meath footpath completed as works on cycle scheme set to resume

Works on the Martha’s Bridge to Circular Road Cycle and Pedestrian Scheme in Navan are set to pause over the Christmas break, as Meath County Council confirms that a new concrete footpath and kerbing has been completed.

This stretch runs from the Circular Road Junction to the Academy Street Junction on the eastern side of the R147 Dublin Road.

Ducting, public lighting columns, and cabling have also been installed, while excavation of the existing footpath between the Academy Street Junction and Martha’s Bridge Junction is ongoing.

The scheme, part of the wider Navan Cycle Network and funded by the National Transport Authority, halted on-site from Friday, December 19, 2025, and work will resume on Monday, January 5, 2026.

The project aims to provide new cycle and upgraded pedestrian facilities and to improve access to the town centre for both cyclists and pedestrians.

It also seeks to support the targets of the Government’s Climate Action Plan by encouraging more people to cycle and walk in Navan, reducing dependence on private vehicles

"Cycling and walking, as part of an active lifestyle, are very important for good health. These activities, together or on their own, promote healthy growth and development in children and young people and are important for healthy ageing, which contributes to a higher quality of life and independence as we grow older,” the local authority said.

In early 2026, construction will continue on the eastern footpath, alongside drainage, kerbing, and additional footpath works.

Footpath construction is also planned to begin on the western side of the R147, from a point near the Heat Merchants premises to the Academy Street Junction.

No major changes to traffic arrangements are expected during this phase, though the eastern footpath remains closed between the Circular Road and Academy Street Junctions, with pedestrians advised to use the footpath on Academy Street.

Meanwhile, access to the bus stop adjacent to Martha’s Bridge will be maintained at all times via the crossing at the Limekiln/Bothár Sion/R147 junction.

The council has also cautioned that the upcoming works may be subject to change “due to weather conditions, supply issues, or other unforeseen events”.
