Basketball fans in Dunshaughlin now have a brand-new place to play as a state-of-the-art 3x3 court has officially opened in The Park, marking a major boost for local sport and community activity.

The project, delivered by Meath Local Sports Partnership (Meath LSP) with funding from the Participation Nation Outdoor Fund, provides a permanent outdoor space that will host programmes, training sessions and events while remaining freely accessible for the public.

Basketball participation has grown significantly in Meath in recent years, with Meath LSP working alongside Basketball Ireland to deliver programmes in schools and clubs across the county.

Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne T.D said he was delighted to see the Participation Nation Outdoor Fund, which he launched as Minister for Sport, supporting high-quality community facilities.

“Access to modern, inclusive sports infrastructure is vital to encouraging people of all ages and abilities to get active, stay healthy, and enjoy the many benefits that sport brings,” he said.

“I want to commend Meath Local Sports Partnership, Meath County Council and the local community for their work in bringing this fantastic project to life, which I know will serve the people of Dunshaughlin for many years to come.”

Cllr Wayne Harding, Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council welcomed the opening, saying that this was the fifth 3x3 basketball court installed in Meath this year.

He said: “With all the known benefits sports and physical activity have to offer, I don’t think you can put a value on an amazing facility such as this.”

Cllr Gerry O’Connor, Chairperson of Meath LSP added that the new facility would help meet demand following an increase in basketball programmes and confirmed that new community sessions will be launched in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile Dunshaughlin Rockets coach and Cavan Eagles player Jane Larkin said the new court would be an important resource for players.

“The small-sided games allow players more touches of the ball, which in turn can improve skills such as shooting, ball handling and decision making,” she said.

“We’ve just seen the Ireland men's 3x3 team make their European Championships debut and the future is bright for the sport. I know at Dunshaughlin Rockets, we’re looking forward to using this court for years to come.”

The new 3x3 basketball court in Dunshaughlin is open for public use immediately, with programmes available to book online through Meath Local Sports Partnership.
