Navan’s only homeless drop-in service secures new home after risk of closure

Navan’s only homeless and food-poverty drop-in service has opened a new community centre following fears its services could be lost.
Joshua Community officially opened its new premises at Kennedy House in Navan this week, with the organisation securing a new base after its previous premises faced closure "due to redevelopment”.
Last year, the charity made a deputation to a meeting of the Navan Municipal District seeking a new premises, as the lease on its former base at Kennedy Place was due to expire.
The service provides a space for people to shower, charge their phones, access tea, coffee and food, or simply spend time in a safe and welcoming environment.
Founded in 2020, Joshua Community supports people experiencing homelessness, food poverty, addiction and social isolation.
Demand for its services has remained high, with more than 2,000 visits recorded at its drop-in centre over the past year, along with over 500 showers provided to people without access to basic facilities.
Speaking at the opening, founder Liam McNamara said the new centre would allow the organisation to continue supporting vulnerable individuals while expanding its services.
The organisation also plans to expand its New Beginnings Programme, a 16-week initiative focused on personal development and employability for people affected by addiction, homelessness and long-term unemployment.
In his address, Mayor Pádraig Fitzsimons described the work of the organisation as “compassion in action” and spoke about the importance of ensuring vulnerable people have access to essential supports.
Following the opening, attendees were given a tour of the new facility and met with staff, volunteers and partner organisations.
Joshua Community has also launched a fundraising appeal to support the long-term running costs of the centre, with a target of securing 150 people willing to contribute €5 per week.
