Rural roads and laneways across Meath are set to benefit from an allocation of €573,970 under this year’s Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

The funding forms part of a €17.55m nationwide package announced for the improvement of non-public and private roads.

Welcoming the funding, Meath West Senator Linda Nelson Murray said the investment would improve access for homeowners, farmers and those using rural amenities across the county.

“I’m delighted to see funding announced for rural roads and laneways in Meath,” she said.

“The funding will see our laneways and non-public roads in Meath receive improved access to homes, farms and outdoor amenities.”

The Local Improvement Scheme, which was first introduced in 2017, provides financial support to local authorities to carry out upgrade works on private roads and laneways that are not normally maintained by councils.

These roads often serve as key access routes to homes, farms and other properties in rural areas.

Under the scheme, local authorities identify and prioritise projects in consultation with residents and landowners.

“Farmers and homeowners who use a laneway to access parts of their land can make a small contribution to the improvement and the scheme provides the rest. This ensures that they can access their homes on better quality roads,” Ms Nelson Murray said.

“I’m delighted to see €573,970 for Meath and look forward to seeing the work carried out,” she added.
