Meath towns set to kick off festive season with Christmas light switch on events

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Five towns in Meath will officially kick off the festive season with Christmas tree light-switching ceremonies taking place across the county this weekend.

Ashbourne’s takes place on Friday, November 28 at 6pm. Navan’s lights will also be switched on at 6pm on Friday at Kennedy Plaza.

On Saturday, Bettystown’s lights will be turned on at 4.45pm, while Dunboyne will hold its ceremony at 8pm. Kells will complete the series of events on Sunday at 4.30pm.

In preparation for the Kells light-switching ceremony and Christmas Market on Sunday, Meath County Council has ordered a temporary road closure in the town.

R-164 Farrell Street, including L-28141-1 The Grove, will be closed from its junction with L-2814-0 Suffolk Street to its junction with R-163 New Market Street/Kenlis Place between 2pm and 6pm.

The closure is required to facilitate crowd safety and event setup as Kells hosts its festive celebrations.

Diversion routes will operate via Suffolk Street, New Market Street, Cannon Street and Cross Street, depending on the direction of travel.

The council said diversion and information signage will be in place and that access for residents and property holders will be maintained throughout.

Meanwhile the local authority is also reminding the public that unlicensed or illegal street trading is prohibited at all Christmas light events across the county.
