Meath libraries invite public to ‘Take a Closer Look’ on national library day

Meath residents are being invited to explore the full range of free services at their local libraries on National Public Libraries Open Day 2025.

The nationwide initiative, themed “Take a Closer Look,” highlights how libraries have evolved into vibrant community hubs. For people in Meath, this means access not only to thousands of books but also to free eBooks, eAudiobooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines, and eLearning courses.

Local libraries also provide welcoming spaces for study, creativity, events, printing services, and inclusive facilities for people of all ages and abilities, including those who are neurodiverse.

As part of the celebrations, Meath Libraries will showcase new Interactive Science Kits for children aged 8 and over. Covering topics such as astronomy, coding, maths, and music, the kits can be borrowed like any other library item, giving families across Meath a new way to engage with science and learning.

Local residents will also have the chance to explore community and meeting rooms, which regularly host book clubs, voluntary groups, craft workshops, and more.

In Trim Library, a new Clothes Swap Kit initiative—developed in collaboration with Meath County Council’s Climate Action Department—will be on display. The project encourages residents to run swap shops and promotes sustainable fashion alternatives, raising awareness of the impact of fast fashion and textile waste.

Maedhbh Rogan-McGann, County Librarian, said residents are already experiencing the benefits of modern library services every day.

“Across our branches we see how libraries are community spaces where people connect, form friendships, and feel part of something bigger,” she said.

“From toddlers discovering story time to retirees in book clubs, students preparing for exams, and jobseekers using our digital resources, we’re proud to support residents across Meath with welcoming, inclusive spaces.”

“We warmly welcome everyone to visit us on Public Libraries Open Day and at any time to explore all that Meath Library Service has to offer.”

Stuart Hamilton, Head of Libraries Development at the Local Government Management Agency, echoed the message, noting that libraries are now central to community life across Ireland.

He said: “Public libraries have evolved into vibrant community hubs that support learning, creativity, wellbeing, and connection. Beyond books, they offer access to IT services, digital tools, creative spaces, and inclusive programmes such as Right to Read, Summer Stars, Family Time at the Library, Literacy for All, Skills for Life, and digital lending services.”

National Public Libraries Open Day 2025 will take place on Saturday, September 27.
