Meath launches initiative to promote inclusive communication ‘beyond words’

A new initiative showcasing the use of communication boards in playgrounds and promoting inclusive communication has been launched in Meath.
The video series, Communication is Beyond Words, developed by the HSE’s Speech and Language Therapy Department in Meath, focuses on the concept of “total communication”, encouraging greater awareness that communication goes beyond spoken words.
The series highlights communication boards installed in playgrounds across the county since 2021, designed to support children and families in expressing needs, feelings and ideas using alternative methods.
The boards form part of a wider effort to create more inclusive public spaces by recognising that communication can take many forms.
Kim Tucker, Speech and Language Therapy Manager with the HSE in Meath, said: “We believe that communication is not just about speaking; it’s about connection.
“These videos celebrate diversity in communication, helping to foster more inclusive environments where everyone’s voice can be heard, no matter how they communicate.”
Meath County Council said the initiative aligns with its broader commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in public services.
Chief executive Kieran Kehoe said the local authority was proud to support the project.
“Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do at Meath County Council,” he said.
“We are proud to work with the HSE, with support from Meta, to help amplify the message that every method of communication is important.”
Meta, which supported the project, said the initiative reflects its focus on building stronger community connections.
Aoife Flynn, Head of Community Development at Meta, said the company was “delighted to support this innovative project which will continue to strengthen opportunities for the community to communicate and connect with each other in new ways”.
The video series is now available across social media platforms.
