Meath County Council will hold a special meeting to consider the nomination of candidates for the upcoming presidential election.

The meeting set to be held on Monday, September 22. 2025, at 9.30am will be conducted in a hybrid format and is dependent on the issuing of a Presidential Election Order.

At the Meath County Council meeting on Monday, members were briefed on the procedures of nominating a presidential candidate.

To secure a nomination via the council route, a candidate must get the backing of four of Ireland’s 31 local authorities.

Council Chief Executive Kieran Kehoe confirmed that the process cannot move forward until the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, issues the Presidential Election Order. This order will set the election timetable, including deadlines for nominations and the polling date.

Under Article 12(3) of the Constitution, a presidential election must take place either by the date the incumbent’s term expires or, if earlier, within 60 days of a resignation, death or removal from office. An election may not be held more than 60 days before the end of the sitting president’s term.

President Michael D. Higgins, who began his second term on 11 November 2018, will see his mandate expire on November 11, 2025. This means the next presidential election must take place on or up to 60 days before that date.
