Meath County Council issues over 100 planning enforcement warning letters

Meath County Council is currently dealing with a significant number of unresolved planning enforcement cases, according to figures shared at the July meeting of the local authority.
The update was provided in response to a query from Independent councillor Yvonne Everard, who sought details on the number of active enforcement files being handled by the council’s Planning Enforcement team.
In their reply, the council confirmed that 94 complaints have been registered and triaged so far this year, not including internal referrals. Meanwhile. 72 new enforcement cases have been formally opened. In the same period, 104 warning letters were issued, 13 enforcement notices were served, and one case was referred for legal proceedings. A total of 29 files were closed during the first half of the year.
The council also noted that 33 planning enforcement cases were listed before the courts between January and June 2025. However, it clarified that this number reflects the amount of cases appearing for mention, hearing, or withdrawal and does not represent the total number of times council staff were required to attend court. The figure also excludes judicial review cases or instances where Meath County Council was listed as a notice party.
