Laytown set for new community centre and park – ‘A facility like this has been needed for two decades’

Plans for a new community centre and multi-use park in Laytown are set to go on public display in the coming weeks.
At the February meeting of Laytown-Bettystown Municipal District, councillors were briefed on the Part 8 planning application for the project proposed by Meath County Council.
The proposal for Tara Road relates to a six-acre site which a local councillor previously asked the council to purchase, with the aim of developing a dedicated community and recreational hub for the area.
The ambitious plan includes a community centre building, a 30-space car park with drop-off area, flexible open space for events and gatherings, and a range of recreational facilities.
Among the features outlined are a learn-to-cycle area, two padel courts, a pickleball court, an open amenity lawn, skatepark, pump track, outdoor classroom and looped walking routes.
The project is intended to provide a central space for community activity while supporting outdoor recreation for all age groups.
At the meeting, councillors present welcomed the proposal. Independent councillor Geraldine Keogan said: “It looks great, this would be fantastic for the community.”
Cllr Carol Lennon also welcomed the plans, but raised concerns about providing a family changing room suitable for families with special needs.
Cllr Stephen McKee said the building will be of use to many people, adding: “We need to also facilitate people who work from home.”
Cllr Sharon Tolan said: “I’m blown away…the whole design has exceeded my dreams. It’s fantastic.”
“A facility like this has been needed for two decades,” she added.
The Part 8 process will allow members of the public to view the plans and make submissions.
While funding is in place to bring the proposal through the planning stage, there is currently no allocation for construction.
Once planning is secured and the project is shovel-ready, Meath County Council is expected to apply for relevant grant funding to deliver the development.
