Ireland’s first wildlife rehabilitation hospital lodges plan for major extension in Meath

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Ireland's first wildlife hospital has lodged a planning application with Meath County Council for the development of a new wildlife rehabilitation and teaching hospital at Mornington in Meath.

The proposal, submitted by Wildlife Rehabilitation Ireland, seeks a change of use for part of the existing driving range. Plans outline a one-and-a-half storey, timber-clad veterinary hospital building with a red corrugated metal roof, set within a secure fenced compound.

The development would also include a range of supporting facilities such as visitor amenities, workshop space and dedicated isolation units.

Specially designed enclosures have been added to the application to provide safe habitats for recovering birds and mammals, while a series of seal pools would allow marine wildlife to be cared for on-site.

In addition to the hospital structures, the project incorporates improvements to the access road, new landscaping and pathways, the installation of a soakaway system, a proprietary wastewater pump station and a connection to the mains wastewater network.

A Natura Impact Statement has been submitted as part of the application to assess any potential effects on the surrounding environment.
