Historic Navan building added to derelict sites register

A prominent historic building in Navan — the former County Infirmary on Bridge Street — has officially been added to the Derelict Sites Register by Meath County Council.

Dating back to 1754, the protected structure is one of the town’s oldest buildings. It served as a HSE facility until 2010 but has remained vacant and deteriorating since. The building was formally listed as a derelict site on June 13.

Despite the building’s heritage and central location, redevelopment has yet to materialise. Planning permission for a mixed-use project, which incorporates the restoration of the infirmary, was granted in December 2022 to Colum and Colette Geraghty, formerly of Navan Coal Yard on the Fair Green.

The approved plans included converting the existing structure into apartments and constructing a new five-storey apartment block on the 0.31-hectare site. In total, 22 residential units were proposed across two buildings, along with 33 parking spaces, bicycle and bin storage, and access via the Fair Green.

The project also involved refurbishing the old Banba Hall nearby, transforming it into a coffee shop, deli, and restaurant.

The site was listed for sale through Smith Harrington in October 2023. As of now, it remains on the market, with no public asking price disclosed.
