Have your say on safety improvements to Meath accident hotspot at Mullagh Cross

By Sylvia Omorodion, Independent.ie

Meath residents are now invited to make submissions or observations on the council’s proposed safety upgrade at Mullagh Cross, a junction long known as a spot for road traffic incidents in the county.

The scheme, now on public display under Part 8 of the Planning and Development Regulations, seeks to address long-standing safety concerns at the intersection of the R156 and R125 in the townlands of Kilmore and Mullagh near Kilcock.

Mullagh Cross has seen multiple collisions and near misses in recent years, with local residents and road users repeatedly raising concerns about visibility, layout, and traffic speeds at the junction.

The proposed works aim to significantly reduce the risk of further accidents through the realignment of approximately 210 metres of the R125 and 300 metres of the R156, both through greenfield sections adjacent to the current roads.

The planned development includes the construction of new road pavement and associated earthworks, improved access for a nearby residential property, new agricultural entrances, and the installation of critical infrastructure such as drainage, boundary treatments, surfacing, road markings, traffic signage, and landscaping. In-line safety measures along the R156 also form part of the proposed scheme.

The council has carried out an Appropriate Assessment screening under Article 6(3) of the EU Habitats Directive and determined that the development is unlikely to have significant environmental effects, and therefore does not require an Environmental Impact Assessment. Nonetheless, members of the public may still apply to An Coimisiún Pleanála within four weeks for a separate screening determination.

Full plans and particulars of the scheme are available for public inspection until Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at Meath County Council’s Planning Office in Navan, at selected libraries and council offices, and online.

Submissions may be made up until Thursday August 28, 2025, either via the planning portal, by email, or in writing to the Planning Department of the council.
